Zinc ointment for acne: reviews

Zinc ointment belongs to the class of dermatoprotectors. It has an antiseptic and drying effect, due to which many patients are trying to use it for the treatment of acne and acne. This article is written by a professional dermatologist and focuses on how effective zinc ointment is.

The composition of zinc ointment (Fig.2-3) -
Zinc ointment has a concentration of 10%, produced by different manufacturers in tubes of different volumes. One hundred grams of ointment contains -

  • zinc oxide 10 grams (active substance)
  • Vaseline 90 grams (excipient).

The composition of zinc paste (Figure 4) -
Often in various articles you can read about the existence of zinc paste from acne, as well as meet it in pharmacies. Zinc paste differs from zinc ointment only by increasing the concentration of zinc oxide (25% versus 10% in zinc ointment).

There is also zinc paste, which introduced salicylic acid. Such a drug is called: salicylic zinc paste. It is also made on petroleum jelly and contains a 25% concentration of zinc oxide.

Zinc Acne Ointment - Dermatologist Reviews

To understand exactly how zinc can reduce acne, we recall the mechanism of acne formation. The main factors for acne are:

  • Increased secretion of the sebaceous glands -
which contributes to the accumulation of sebum secretion (sebum) in the pores of the skin. This contributes to the formation of acne vulgaris, which are nothing but plugs in the skin pores (Fig.5-6).
  • Violation of the process of epithelialization inside the hair follicle -
As a result, a large number of desquamated dead epithelial cells accumulate in the follicle lumen, which, together with an increase in the secretion of the sebaceous glands, leads to the formation of acne (fat plugs in the pores of the skin).
  • Development inside the hair follicle inflammation -
the formation of acne in the pores of the skin leads to the creation of a closed space in the hair follicles, where the secret of the sebaceous glands accumulates. In a confined space, conditions are created for the rapid growth of bacteria, which leads to inflammation and the formation of pus. So acne is formed (Fig. 7).

Effect of zinc on acne formation -

  • zinc reduces secretion by the sebaceous glands,
  • normalizes epithelialization processes inside the hair follicles,
  • increases the sensitivity of bacteria to antibiotics and antiseptics,
  • has a slight anti-inflammatory effect.

So why is zinc ointment ineffective -

It turns out that zinc acts on almost all major factors leading to the formation of acne. So why would zinc ointment or zinc paste never cure acne? Zinc ointment for acne - reviews of dermatologists can only be negative, and this is due to two main reasons:

  1. The composition of zinc ointment (paste) is a compound of zinc oxide -
this compound is insoluble in any solvents, and therefore zinc oxide is not able to dissociate into ions. That is why zinc in the composition of zinc oxide can never penetrate through the skin, reduce the production of secretion by the sebaceous glands or normalize the processes of epithelialization of hair follicles, since Only active zinc ions are capable of all this.

There are preparations containing zinc compounds, which are soluble in various organic and inorganic solvents, and, accordingly, can dissociate into ions. These drugs will have a curative effect on acne.

    Effective zinc compounds -
→ zinc acetate (part of "Zener"),
→ zinc hyaluronate (part of the Curiosin gel),
→ Zinc sulphate (part of the Zincteral tablet formulation).

  2. Any ointment forms of drugs increase acne. -
Acne is caused by the formation of fatty plugs in the skin pores and the subsequent addition of a bacterial infection. All ointments are made on a fatty basis, and this means that their use will further clog the pores of the skin with fatty compounds. And this will lead to the appearance of acne, and then in their place - acne.

Important: as we see: patients' search for new areas of use of traditional drugs - can only aggravate the disease. Still, the doctor should select the drugs and treatment regimens. After all, the patient will never be able to figure out in what cases it is necessary to apply antiseptics, when antibiotics, when retinoids, when azelaic acid, when isotretinoin or combinations thereof.

It is best to go through a primary consultation with a dermatologist, receive prescription drugs and treatment regimens. But the treatment itself is carried out at home. How correctly and with what preparations acne should be treated - read the article:

Summary -

Zinc ointment application of acne will be a complete waste of time, and may even aggravate the skin condition due to the fatty basis of such an ointment (contains petroleum jelly). Similar effects will have zinc paste and salicylic zinc paste, which also consist of zinc oxide and petroleum jelly.

Adding salicylic acid to zinc paste does not make it more effective. The fact is that the fatty base contained in ointments (for example, petroleum jelly) prevents the penetration of the active ingredients from the ointment into the skin.

It should be borne in mind that they will not have any therapeutic effect with acne and other zinc-based drugs -

  • Desitin cream (contains zinc oxide),
  • Diaderm cream (contains zinc oxide),
  • Zindol (contains an aqueous suspension of zinc oxide).
